Now that you’ve highlighted the disadvantages of renaming shop.php, I think I will try out this .htaccess thing for all my aom sites.

I did do some initial configuration (i.e. modifying .htaccess). That worked well. I'd also like when a visitor navigates back to the home page that it appears as the main URL without any extension.
